The plastic grocery bags we use for all manner of things are incredibly harmful to the environment, with the US alone consuming 100 billion of the things each year. In exciting news, China (of all places) announced a campaign to eliminate them by June. The country uses over a trillion each year.
Following this decision Australia, a the only other industrialized nation to not sign the Kyoto Protocol (until leadership changed last month) decided to follow China's lead. These bags represent us at our most wasteful. Hopefully these projects will be successful. It will have immediate positive effects on the environment.
We have something else, apart from health care, to learn from China.
