Australia's Conflicting Environmental Policy

The BBC has been reporting on environmentalist outrage on the Australian government's suggestion about kangaroo hunting. They suggest that, having shot the mother, one should take the joey (baby) and kill it "quickly" by smashing its head against a metal bar. The kangaroo industry (yes, there is such a thing) claims that it is the quickest way of "dispatching the animal". The quickest way is to not kill the baby in the first place.

Whoever is supporting this law is giving the species a bad name. It frightens me that there are actually people who could do that without feeling any sense of remorse.

At the same time, however, Australian boats are tailing the Japanese ones which are attempting to catch several hundred endangered whales.

Don't even let me go into that. Kudos to Kevin Rudd (the Australian PM) for doing this.
