Musharraf to Step Down As Pakistan Army Head

General Pervez Musharraf has caused an uproar since he declared martial law on November 3. Musharraf, who deposed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in a 1999 coup, has been widely pressured to resign his position as army head by the international community. Sharif, who returned yesterday from exile in Saudi Arabia, has attempted to contest parliamentary elections due in January.

Musharraf said through his spokesman that he would resign on Wednesday.

The United States has maintained its support for Pakistan, a key ally in the so-called "War on Terror" and a necessary component in Middle East stability. Pakistan, a nuclear power, was on the brink of using nuclear weapons against India in the 2002 fight over the northern province of Kashmir.

Musharraf's move will leave him with tremendous power, and this does not come close to solving the problem. Hopefully, though, it will be the first step on the road to a stable, democratic, and US-friendly Pakistan. If not, we are in trouble.
