The United States woke up to the news that North Korea tried - and failed - to launch its missile with an unknown payload. The Taepodong-2 missile fell harmlessly into the Pacific Ocean after the first stage disengaged and dropped into the Sea of Japan, as expected. The North Korean state-run media report a successful launch, but NORAD (North American Aerospace Defence) reported a failed launch. More serious than the missile itself is the provocation to the international community.
The US, South Korea, Japan, the UK, and France said that North Korea was "in violation of the Security Council". Russia and China have called fdor the prevention of action that would increase tension. A Security Council of the UN is holding an emergency meeting to decide on a course of action. However, at this early stage, there are few details, and more will be clear as information comes in.
