Last month I read Thomas P.M. Barnett's latest book, Great Powers: American and the World After Bush. It concludes his "trilogy," begun with The Pentagon's New Map which won high praise from numerous security experts. Dr. Barnett has advised the Defense Department on issues of war and peace, and his expertise revolves around using globalization to America's advantage. As the industrialized "Core" spreads its developments to the unindustrialized "Gap," America has numerous opportunities to reclaim its status as global leader and run a more efficient, effective, and ultimately more moral military. Think Thomas Friedman with larger historical perspective and a follow-up.
In this talk from lecture series TED, Barnett examines the future of the American military. About 25 minutes, but highly recommended.
