An Arbitrary Celebration of Consumerism

by James Buckland

First off, New Years. At midnight I drank a champagne glass filled with tap water. It felt no different from the year 2008, except for the fact that it is one year closer to a time when humans cannot wear those stupid year-glasses, where the 00s form the eyes. In fact, society will benefit from this for just under a millennium.

However, there is some profoundly disturbing news. This New Year's, a Muslim family was kicked off an airline for – get this! – talking about the safest place to sit. Normal, right? Well, the thing that aroused passenger's suspicion was their lack of 'buzzwords' like 'bomb'.

So they were kicked off the airline for not talking about bombs. Well, the airline later released a statement apologizing to not only the family, but also all the other passengers. They apologized to the passengers who weren't kicked off for the possible danger. And, they said that the steps taken were necessary.

An Islamic civil rights group said; to paraphrase; that they wouldn't have been kicked off if people hadn't thought they were Islamic.

The racism here is atrocious.

To have an equivalent, this is like barring people who went to Virginia Tech from going out in public, just in case.

There are always radicals and wackos in every group, but America has done nothing to prevent racism. Nothing at all. I hope to FSM it gets better in the upcoming year.

Tips for 2009: buy a new calendar.

*Strictly this is not true, in New York they gave out cheap foam hats with brand logos all over them.

Alas, the airline incident that you mentioned is not an isolated occurrence. Ironically, such racism is perpetuated by consumerism, which, in tandem with our unchecked capitalism, creates an ignorant, greedy, and indulgent populace that wears their blissfully ignorant hubris on their sleeve.
