New reports indicate that in light of Obama's recent surge in the polls in Michigan, Senator John McCain has given up on the state. Only a week or two ago the pundits were pointing out the state as the GOP's best pickup opportunity, but the polls now show a comfortable 8 to 10 point lead for the Democrat.
Martin's campaign sources say that McCain events in the state have been canceled, advertising stopped, and operatives moved to more competitive states in the region (as well as Florida, a state McCain was counting on in which Obama has claimed a lead).
My take: why didn't they wait until after the debate? This tells me that the McCain camp knows that Palin will only make things worse. Good sign.

This proves that the strategy of the Mccain campaign is flawed. They don't seem to look past two weeks into the future. The pick of Palin proves that. Sure it was great for a two week bounce, but she has become a major liability. Tonight I believe Palin will do fine. Biden will not be enough of an attack dog and she will do her regualar song and dance, "I am just like all of you."
Realist Guy
While McCain probably could've carried Michigan had he chosen Romney as his VP, I don't think this shows any inherent weakness in his campaign . The truth is that Obama has done the same thing in several states (Georgia, Nebraska, and a few more that escape me). This action by both campaigns is simply a realistic approach to the election. They realize that they won't win every state. I wouldn't read to much into it.
It just makes the electoral math a lot harder for McCain.
