George W. Bush Sewage Plant

by Young Democrat

"Latte-liberals in San Francisco are taking their efforts to the extreme," began James Dobson's radio program yesterday. "A group of nose pierced students are trying to name a sewage plant after George Bush."

But for the nose pierced reference, James is correct. San Francisco scholars are attempting to alter the name of the Oceanside Water Pollution Control Plant to the George W. Bush Sewage Plant, fitting because of the mess 43rd will leave behind.
The sewage facility will clean up a mess for at least another 20 years, somewhat similar to what the next President will be doing by sweeping up Dubya's errors.
In SF, it takes 7,000 valid signatures to qualify for the November ballot. The undergrads turned in over 10,000 people's John Hancock, with their names and numbers.

Republicans are calling it "a horrible idea" that is "childish and...stupid." And although I see the humor behind this plan, I agree with them.
San Francisco doesn't need any more press about New York Times reading lunatics. As a center for women's rights, environmental action, and other important causes, news like this tarnishes my city's reputation to a new level; something we cannot afford in the movement to provide a better future to the next generation.
We all disagree with the course George Bush has led our country. But he does deserve basic respect and dignity, maybe a little honor too; regardless of what he has done, he has shown dedication, commitment and loyalty to many of his principles.
More importantly, our nation is at a turning point. From the debt to the war, a large mess remains. Shouldn't ballot initiatives focus on helping our communities electing good leaders, not poking fun at the ones we disagree with? We have larger things to deal with than this silliness.
San Francisco Public Utilities Commission spokesman Tony Winnicker said the following, "The plant that they're seeking to rename really offers extraordinary environmental benefits. Without it, raw sewage and storm water would flow into the bay and the oceans and the streets." Finally, why name something after George Bush when it does great things? The name doesn't fit.
