Iran and Pakistan: A Brief Op-Ed

I had just gotten behind Hillary Clinton, figuring that she was a tough leader with lots of money, a brilliant husband, and the experience and savvy to win. Now I'm not so sure. She has been taking hits on the Iran vote, which was frankly stupid. Iran is the least of our worries. One bombed country at a time. As Stephen Colbert says, "Let's hope Turkey invades and takes it off our hands." Pakistan is falling apart, and they actually have nuclear weapons. Musharraf knows that the US is tied up, and even if it could would not cross Pakistan, and so he is seizing his opportunity to declare martial law and become a dictator.

The only smart move would be to strike a deal with Iran, placating I'm a Dinner Jacket in return for a promise to slow the nuclear technology. In reality though, their nuclear program consists of a hunk of uranium and a couple of test tubes. The danger posed by Iran is that the turmoil in Iraq has left the former as the region's major power. They will want to annex, officially or otherwise, the Shiite territory in Iraq. We need to convince Iran to stay put, and labeling their Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization isn't helping. At all.

Hillary had an opening to assert her political gravitas and executive abilities by capitalizing on Obama's inexperience and missteps on Iran policy. By casting this vote, she has called into question the only qualities for which anyone supports her. This, coupled with her weak showing in last week's debate and poor response to it, has forced her numbers down by ten points. In the debate, she tried to please everyone by continually refining her positions on Governor Spitzer's immigrant drivers licenses and Iraq. When Senator Edwards responded with a nasty ad accusing her of duplicity and hypocrisy, she, rather than clarify her positions once and for all like a strong executive, tried to twist the situation to highlight her gender differences. The plan failed miserably.

Now, Pakistan is looking like Iraq under Saddam, with nuclear weapons. The country needs a leader who can deal with this issue in a thoughtful, intelligent manner. Mismanagement of this issue can lead to nuclear war. Senator Clinton has failed the test.
