This bill lets and more importantly encourages police officers to make a judgment based on appearance/race. No Mexican/Latino should feel safe under this law; to them it is literally living under a police state.
To those of you who say this is merely enforcing the law, it is not. Immigration is a federal matter for the INS. As someone who actually believes in states' rights (not just when it's convenient), I don't want anyone but the INS enforcing (our backwards) immigration laws. When they do enforce the laws though, it needs to be done not through racial profiling.
Anyone serious about civil rights and civil liberties should be appalled and working to fight this bill.

Legalized racism: the new Arizona immigration law

The biggest problem with this law, and the ground on which it would be most challengeable, in my opinion, is that immigration falls under federal jurisdiction. Yes, illegal immigration is a problem in Arizona. No, that doesn't mean Arizona alone can pass laws about it — immigration is a federal issue and must be addressed by the federal government. Has our federal government been somewhat remiss in tackling this issue? Perhaps. But that is not justification for states or individuals to take matters into their own hands, particularly in this manner.
Ironically, I'm glad that anti-immigration paranoïa has sread worldwide, including in Arizona.
It's been a great European, -and particularly french- challenge for a few years now, revealing how self-centered our domestic policy are, both in France and US.
Of course, some would argue that the purpose of a domestic policy is to be self-centered, but as an idealist student, I will admit that it must not be egoist.
Immigration is a problem in France for a long time now, when in US, inmigrants were accepted, or even wanted, for a large scale of manual work.
The exact same as France in the 60s-70s-80s.
THe point being that economic well-being, particularly in unemployment domain, is probably the main variable in inmigration acceptance. Far, very far of conservatism...
Our french proudness in our liberal model is safe, we are NORMAL xenophobes, only when our workplaces are endangered and stolen by the eviiil immigrants (who also are polygames, islamists, terrorists, and generally lazy and criminals).
Interesting that with economic crisis, we see a worldwide harmonisation of imigration laws, in stricter of course.
Arizona is not the only one there, be prepared to hear more and more about immigration if you follow french path...
