In surprising news, Caroline Kennedy, considered by many to be the frontrunner to be selected by Governor David Paterson to become the Junior Senator from New York State (replacing now-Secretary of State Hilary Rodham Clinton), has stated that she will withdraw her bid.
She cited her close relationship with her uncle, Senator Ted Kennedy, and the ongoing deterioration of his health--yesterday, at an inaugural lunch, it manifested itself as he was hospitalized as a result of a seizure--as the reason for withdrawing. An official statement is, according to the New York Times, going to be released as early as tonight.
