As the New York times has reported here, Senator Clinton (D-NY) is weighing whether to become the Secretary of State or remain a senator. There are serious questions that she must be asking herself about the relative merits of accepting or refusing the job, but, should she accept, there are big questions about who could replace her.
Gov. David Paterson is legally invested with the sole power to appoint a replacement Senator, who, if appointed in January 2009 or later, would serve until the 2010 elections. Clearly, this person will be a big contender in New York state politics, whoever it is.
In the next few days, I'll be writing post another posts describing candidates who are in the running and why or why not he or she could be appointed. Here's a brief list:
Michael R. Bloomberg--Mayor of New York City
Rep. Gregory Meeks--6th District (Queens)
Rep. Nita Lowey--18th District (Westchester)
Rep. Anthony Weiner--9th District (Queens/Brooklyn)
Rep. Carolyn Maloney--14th District (Manhattan/Queens)
Rep. Jerrold Nadler--8th District (Manhattan/Brooklyn)
Rep. Brian Higgins--27th District (Buffalo/Upstate)
Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand--20th District (Upstate, Near Albany)
Malcolm Smith--Minority Leader (soon to be Majority Leader?) of the NYS Senate
Andrew Cuomo--NYS AG
Tom Suozzi--Nassau County Executive
And the (current) perceived frontrunner: Rep. Nydia Velásquez--12th District (Brooklyn/Queens/Manhattan).
More detailed profiles to come.
