Waxman to be Chairman of Energy and Commerce Committee

by Artagnan

Congratulations to Democrat Henry Waxman (CA-30) of the House of Representatives, the new Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee in Congress. In what perhaps has been the first change to the Congressional seniority system, Rep. Waxman defeated Rep. John Dingell (MI-15), who is the current Dean of the House, having served since 1955.
The Democratic Caucus, in a closed vote, chose Rep. Waxman, the Chairman of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee for the 110th Congress, over Rep. Dingell by a vote of 137-122. Rep. Waxman is known as a man who stands for reform and transparent government; above all, he has pressed for accountability in all branches of government, including the executive branch.
Congratulations to Rep. Waxman for obtaining the chairmanship of what many consider the most powerful committee in Congress, due to its wide jurisdiction over many issues: it has original jurisdiction over the use and delivery of energy, all telecommunications, and all commerce regulations--including any legislation that Congress passes via the Commerce Clause. In addition to all of this, it is responsible for food and drug safety, environmental health, public health, and consumer protection. It also regulates the Department of Energy, HHS, the FTC, the FCC, and the FDA.
With this appointment, I note that members the Congressional Progressive Caucus control ten very importan committee chairmanships, including Judiciary, Rules, and Energy and Commerce. I believe that the 111th Congress will therefore make progress in the next two years and expand the rights of americans.
