France has reached a deal with the United Arab Emirates to establish its first permanent Mid-Eastern base, in return for nuclear information.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy has said in interviews that he believes in Arab nations' rights to nuclear energy. He has reached agreements of sorts with Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Libya, and now the UAE. I am a skeptic about nuclear power. It seems too easy a target for terrorism and poses too much of a health hazard with waste. The plutonium and highly radioactive waste of nuclear energy must be stored somewhere, and I would prefer to not have to deal with storing massive amounts of such materials. I think anyone paying attention must question the wisdom of giving such support to such people at such a time. This is not a racist sentiment. The countries are simply too unstable. I don't trust us to handle our nuclear waste either.
