The BBC reports that Lt-Col Steve Jordan, the highest-ranking soldier charged in the Abu-Ghraib prison torture scandal, has been acquitted. Detainees were sexually harrassed, humiliated, beated, raped, and several died. Soldiers involved have received jail sentences, and Jordan's acquittal is a huge blow to advocates of civil liberties and common decency. Any American service officer complicit in the events has single-handedly lowered our position in the world, and does not deserve recognition as a member of the Armed Forces. In short, Jordan should go to jail. Period.
