Tomorrow leaders of several middle-eastern nations will meet at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland to attempt to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Syria will also be represented, and a likely outcome will involve the return of the Golan Heights, seized during the 1967 war, to Syria. This country has not been helping us in Iraq, and good relations with Syria is the only way we can start to pacify the insurgency in Iraq. The vast majority of Iraqi refugees live in Syria, and some estimates put that total at well over a million. The negotiated return of the Golan Heights would improve relations. We want Syria on our side.
So much for US interests. Israeli PM Ehud Olmert and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas will be present, but although they have expressed hope that the conflict will be resolved, outside observers remain doubtful. Read the full story here, here, and here.
